Live music instantly impacts everyone -- sharing joy, comfort, excitement, and many other positive, healthful emotions. However, it is a universal language that is often viewed as a privilege to experience. It often requires money, transportation, and other resources that are inaccessible to those who are underserved -- the elderly, ailing, veterans, and others. This is what FreeNotes is designed to change.
FreeNotesDMV is an organization formed by Ethan McCarney, a high school student and lifelong musician. He is an accomplished musician, having earned top three places in international piano competitions and will earn an associate diploma for piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2023. By making live music more accessible to the underserved, Ethan hopes to help positively impact the lives of people in his community.
Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
No. FreeNotesDMV is an organization in DC, Maryland, and Virginia that partners with organizations like retirement communities, nursing homes, homeless shelters, healthcare facilities, and others that cater to those who are underserved. We connect up-and-coming musicians with those organizations that can offer a facility for the musicians to donate their time and talents.
Musicians don't need to be advanced -- typically at least four to five years of experience. It really depends on the facility being booked. Whether you have been playing for four years or 50 years, if you are able to play a few pieces, there are venues with underserved communities who really want to hear you.
Yes. This organization is a great way for students to help fulfill their school's volunteer requirements.
Yes. FreeNotesDMV is designed for all musicians -- pianists, vocalists, guitarists, violinists, and others. If instruments or equipment must be provided by the facility in order for you to perform, you are encouraged to look at the details about the venue on our Facilities page. For example, some facilities can provide an acoustic piano. If your questions are not addressed in those details, you can contact the facility or submit a question to FreeNotesDMV.
It depends on the facility. Musicians are always encouraged to take whatever precautions necessary for themselves. Certain facilities may require heightened COVID-19 restrictions if the facility may be a retirement/nursing home, healthcare facility, etc. Such details can usually be found on our Facilities page.
Every facility is different, and therefore audience numbers can vary, typically between 10-50+. Some of this information may be captured in the details on our Facilities page.
Many facilities may not be designed to accommodate large bands, however, this should be noted on our Facilities page.
You will find most facilities to be indoors -- in healthcare facilities, recreation centers, and other places. However, some may offer outdoor performances, depending on the season/weather, etc.
Each facility is different. Typically, musicians are asked to bring their own instruments and equipment (except for acoustic piano). Most facilities are equipped with electrical -- such details are usually listed on our Facilities page.
